Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky ： Piano Sonata in cis-moll Op.80

Structured in four movements, the sonata moves between powerful assertion and delicate lyricism from the outset. In the first movement, the contrast between themes and the tension of their development should be clearly shaped; the second movement is notable for its long-breathed, singing melodies. The light, agile motion of the third movement leads to a finale that closes the work with momentum and brilliant virtuosity. In performance, it is important to keep inner voices audible within thick chords and to avoid muddy pedaling. Bringing out the distinct character of each movement, while maintaining the rhythmic flow in rapid passages, allows both the intensity and lyricism of the work to emerge.
