Overview

Franz Peter Schubert (1797–1828) was an Austrian composer who worked mainly in Vienna. Inheriting the formal clarity of the Classical tradition while opening new paths through lyrical melody, subtle harmony, and introspective expression, he became a significant figure in the transition from Classicism to Romanticism. He wrote more than 600 songs and is known for works such as “Erlkönig” and the song cycle Winterreise, yet his gifts also extended to symphonies, chamber music, sacred music, and piano repertoire. His piano works include the Impromptus, D899 and D935, Moments musicaux, D780, piano sonatas, variations, and sets of dances such as the Ecossaises. Despite his short life, Schubert created a wide range of music, from intimate miniatures to large-scale works, marked by a natural gift for song and a distinctive harmonic sensibility.
