Based on a theme by Anselm Hüttenbrenner, this work unfolds through 13 variations while retaining the outline of the principal melody. From one variation to the next, the rhythm, register, accompaniment texture, and treatment of ornamentation change, drawing different expressions from the same theme. A central point of interest is hearing the character of each variation while keeping the melodic continuity clear through these changes. In performance, it is important to bring out the principal melody and carefully balance it with the inner voices and accompaniment. Delicate figurations should not sound mechanical; attention to phrasing, direction, and musical breathing allows the overall flow to emerge naturally.
