Franz Peter Schubert : Introduction and Variations on “Trockne Blumen” in e-moll D 802 Op.160

Type:Ensemble Collection:Variations Key: e-moll

Post Share

Based on the melody of Schubert’s song “Trockne Blumen,” this work consists of an introduction, a theme, and seven variations for flute and piano. After presenting the melodic outline clearly from the introduction into the theme, each variation changes the treatment of rhythm, figures, register, and ornamentation, giving the same melody a wide range of character. The flute should maintain a singing, naturally flowing breath, while the piano should be played not merely as accompaniment but as a voice that supports the character of each variation. Careful balance of dynamics and articulation, together with clear contrasts from the theme, brings the appeal of the structure into focus.
