This work for piano four hands consists of a theme based on a French song followed by 8 variations. While preserving the outline of the theme, each variation changes the rhythm, figuration, register, and texture of the accompaniment, drawing different expressions from the same material. One of its major attractions is hearing the contrast between the elements shared with the theme and the transformations. In performance, the two players should coordinate their breathing carefully, bringing out passages in which the melody is passed between them as well as the movement of the inner voices. Careful balance of dynamics, together with adjustments of articulation and pedaling to suit each variation, helps clarify the overall flow.
