Overview

Edvard Grieg (1843–1907) was a leading Norwegian composer of the Romantic era. He incorporated the sounds of Nordic nature, folk melodies, and dance rhythms into his music, combining national character with refined harmony and concise, memorable themes. His works are marked by delicate sonorities that can suggest brightness, simplicity, and quiet melancholy. His best-known compositions include the incidental music for Peer Gynt, the Piano Concerto in A minor, and the Lyric Pieces. Grieg wrote many piano miniatures inspired by everyday scenes and the Norwegian landscape. In 25 Norwegian Folk Songs and Dances and Two Norwegian Folk Tunes, the influence of folk melody and dance is especially clear. Even in these small-scale works, he condenses a distinctive sense of poetry and color, making his piano music an important expression of Norwegian Romanticism.
