About This Piece’s Difficulty
Piabase rates this piece at 48.0 for technical difficulty ("Intermediate") and 5.0 for musicality. In addition to fundamental technique, this piece calls for a wider range of skills, including secure fingering and detailed control.Alongside deep understanding of the work, an exceptionally high level of musical expression is required in tone, phrasing, timing, and structure.Musical shaping matters more than the technical difficulty alone suggests, and expressive refinement after the notes are learned strongly affects the finished result.

This is the first piece in Grieg’s collection of piano pieces arranged from his own songs. It conveys the mother’s grief suggested by the title through a long-breathed melody and harmonies rich in shading. In the songful opening flow, it is important to sustain the melodic line without interruption while keeping the inner voices and accompaniment restrained. Listen closely to changes in sonority and movement, and express the emotional intensification without rushing. As the music approaches its close, attention to the fading of the resonance, as well as to the dynamics, allows the depth of sorrow and quiet prayer to emerge. Use the pedal sparingly, avoiding blur while supporting the changing harmonies.
