This is the first piece in Grieg’s collection of Norwegian folk songs arranged for piano. Within its concise form, a simple and familiar folk-like melody is presented, while its combination with the accompaniment creates subtle shades of color. Carefully shaping the relationship between melody and accompaniment, as well as the unity of each phrase, is key to maintaining a natural flow. Begin by bringing out the main melody with a singing legato, while keeping the accompaniment soft and restrained. Subtle changes in dynamics and tempo should be used sparingly; preserving the music’s simplicity while drawing out its expression and lingering resonance reveals the appeal of its economical writing.
