Overview

William L. Gillock (1917–1993) was an American composer and one of the leading writers of piano music for students in the modern era. He created numerous pieces for beginners and intermediate players, turning vivid scenes and moods into music that is immediately accessible. His style combines memorable melodies with jazz and popular-music rhythms, dance-inspired movement, and sonorities and harmonies reminiscent of Impressionism. The technical challenges in his music are closely connected to musical expression, allowing students to develop both enjoyment and artistry at the piano. His works continue to be widely performed in lessons and recitals. Abandoned Farm and pieces from the Accent On series, including Autumn Waltz, Bazaar, Black Key Etude, and Carillon, offer representative examples of Gillock’s vivid imagination and distinctive piano writing.
