Overview

Dmitri Borisovich Kabalevsky (1904–1987) was a Russian composer and educator who worked primarily during the Soviet era. A major figure in twentieth-century Russian music alongside Shostakovich and Prokofiev, he wrote music marked by approachable melodies, clear structures, and vivid rhythmic character. He devoted particular attention to music for children and piano students, often linking the development of technical skills with musical expression. Among his piano works, the 24 Easy Pieces for Children, Op. 39, is especially well known. Pieces such as “Little Song,” “March,” “Autumn Song,” “Joke,” and “Waltz” present a variety of moods and characters in concise forms. Through both his compositions and his educational activities, Kabalevsky helped make music more accessible, and his piano pieces continue to be widely used and enjoyed by students.
