Overview

Sergei Rachmaninov (1873–1943) was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor who later worked extensively in Europe and the United States. Standing at the transition from the late Romantic era to modern times, he is known for his expansive melodies, rich and weighty harmonies, and powerful piano writing that makes full use of the instrument’s wide range. His music combines Russian nostalgia and deep lyricism with a strong sense of grandeur and demanding virtuosity, qualities that appear as clearly in his solo piano works as in his symphonies and concertos. The Prelude in C-sharp Minor, Piano Concerto No. 2, and Symphony No. 2 are among his best-known compositions. In his piano music, works such as the 2 Pieces, 3 Nocturnes, and 4 Pieces reveal a gift for song-like melody, subtle shading, and richly resonant textures.
