🇷🇺Sergei Rachmaninov ： Variations on a Theme of Chopin c-moll Op.22

In this set of 22 variations, Rachmaninov draws a wide range of expressions from the theme of Chopin’s Prelude No. 20. While preserving the outline of the theme, he transforms the harmony, rhythm, register, and texture, moving between concise passages and episodes that bring virtuosic brilliance to the fore, with tension and release unfolding throughout. A key attraction lies in the contrasting character of each variation and in how the presence of the theme is sustained as the music moves toward its conclusion. In performance, it is important not to rely solely on a weighty sonority, but to clarify the movement of the inner voices and the dialogue between parts, carefully differentiating the tempo feel and touch of each variation. At the major climaxes, the pianist should maintain forward momentum while also attending to lyrical detail and avoiding excessive pedal blur.
