The fifth piece of Rachmaninov’s Morceaux de fantaisie, “Serenade,” is a character piece woven from a melody suggestive of an intimate address and a fluid accompaniment. It moves from a calm passage toward sections of deeper expression, bringing the whole work together with a sense of the melody returning in memory. The principal melody should be clearly brought out from the surrounding voices while the accompaniment remains light and supple.
