This is Rachmaninoff’s own arrangement for solo piano of “Now Sleep” from Stravinsky’s The Firebird. Centered on a songlike, long-breathed melody, it shapes a quiet afterglow through nuanced harmony and delicate accompaniment. The music unfolds gently, with changes in the thickness of the sound and in dynamics; where the melody gradually expands, a natural sense of rising intensity emerges. In performance, the right-hand melody should be brought out softly, while the left hand and inner voices remain restrained and carefully balanced. Avoid connecting the resonance too freely with the pedal, and focus on the breathing of each phrase. Rather than relying on volume alone, use changes of tone color to express both serenity and deep feeling.
