Based on Kreisler’s melody, Rachmaninoff arranged this work for solo piano, creating a blend of elegance and melancholy. Above an accompaniment with the character of a gentle waltz, the main melody emerges in a singing style; as the piece unfolds, its sonority and motion expand, heightening the emotion before leaving a lingering impression at the close. Highlights include the delicate exchanges between the melody and inner voices, as well as the sense of rising intensity created by the rich chords. In performance, keep the right-hand melody clear, the left hand light, and the pedal free from blurring. Restrained tempo flexibility, guided by the natural breathing of each phrase, allows both the sweetness and sorrow to come through naturally.
