Overview

Nikolai Kapustin (1937–2020) was a Ukrainian-born composer and pianist who worked in the musical sphere of the Soviet Union and later Russia. He occupies a distinctive place in piano music from the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries through his combination of traditional classical forms with jazz-derived swing rhythms, blues-inflected sonorities, and complex harmonies. Although his style grew out of his experience as a jazz performer, his compositions are meticulously written out rather than left to improvisation. They therefore combine an energetic, accessible surface with the structural discipline, rhythmic precision, and considerable technical demands of the classical piano repertoire. His 6 Pieces for Piano, Op. 133, presents a range of contrasting characters in compact movements, while the 7 Polyphonic Pieces for Left Hand, Op. 87, explores independent lines and demanding pianistic textures. Works such as Andante, Op. 58, likewise demonstrate his distinctive fusion of jazz language and classical piano writing.
