Overview

Claude Debussy (1862–1917) was a leading French composer whose music brought a major change to the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. He is often associated with musical Impressionism, incorporating whole-tone and pentatonic scales as well as church modes to create richly colored, delicate sonorities beyond traditional functional harmony and established forms. Rather than telling a direct story, he conveyed light, water, landscapes, and poetic images through layers of sound and lingering resonance. His piano output includes the Préludes, Images, Children’s Corner, and the important Douze Études, which address technical challenges while expanding the possibilities of piano tone and harmony. Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and Clair de lune are also representative works that reveal his distinctive musical language.
