The sixth piece from Debussy’s Six Etudes in Canon Form, arranged for two pianos from the original by Schumann. Within the slow flow of the Adagio, the two pianos respond to one another, passing the melody between them as overlapping voices shape the music. Each part should be heard as an independent line, with the direction of the melody clearly expressed without clouding the sonority. By maintaining the breathing of the phrases and the changing harmonies without haste, performers can bring out the quiet tension and rich resonance. Careful balance in volume and pedaling allows the equilibrium created through this dialogue to emerge.
