Based on an original by Schumann, this is a short canon-form work for two pianos. No. 3 unfolds at an Andantino pace, with the two pianos passing the same material between them as the music develops. Its appeal lies in the overlap of the leading and following voices, where gentle lyricism coexists with contrapuntal tension. It is important to keep each part clear while shaping the whole in a single breath. Rather than allowing the instruments to compete in volume, performers should carefully highlight the exchanges of imitation and the climaxes of the phrases. Judicious pedaling, avoiding a blurred resonance, brings out the transparent layering and natural flow.
