In this arrangement by Debussy for two pianos of Saint-Saëns’s original, the music moves from a lyrical introduction to a rondo filled with vitality and capricious character. The shaping of the melody and the musical flow passed between the two pianos are among its highlights. Beyond its brilliant virtuosity, careful control of nuanced dynamics, lively rhythms, and the direction of each phrase brings out the work’s appeal. In the introduction, keep the overlapping sonorities clear; in the rondo, maintain lucid ensemble and a flexible sense of tempo to sharpen the contrast between the sections.
