This is the first piece in a set of etudes in canon form for two pianos, based on the original by Schumann. Marked “not too fast,” it unfolds through imitative motion, with one voice following a preceding melody and the musical material passed between the two pianos. It is important to distinguish the interacting voices while maintaining an uninterrupted flow. The entries of the melodies should be clearly shaped, while the pursuing voices should not become too heavy; careful balance of dynamics and a sense of phrase direction and breathing within the calm tempo bring out both the canonic structure and the overlapping sonorities.
