Overview

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) was a German composer who carried the Classical tradition forward while opening the way to Romanticism. Building on clear formal structures and organic motivic development, he joined powerful contrasts, dramatic tension, and profound spiritual expression. His early music reflects the refined style of Haydn and Mozart; his middle period expands toward heroic and forceful expression, while his late works explore a more introspective and experimental world. Despite the progressive loss of his hearing, he continued to compose and left landmark works in the symphonic, chamber, and piano repertoires. In his piano music, he was also an inventive master of variation, transforming themes with great imagination. This can be heard in the 12 Variations on a Theme from Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Op.66, the 12 Variations on Se vuol ballare, WoO40, and the Three Marches for piano four hands, Op.45, which combine musical ingenuity with vivid performance appeal.
