Ludwig van Beethoven ： Variations WoO 73

Based on a theme in B-flat major, this work unfolds through a succession of 10 variations. While preserving the approachable and refined outline of the theme, each variation changes the rhythm, register, ornamental motion, and layering of the sounds, creating varied expression within a concise design. One of its great appeals is the opportunity to hear the differences between the variations, while also following the overall flow. In performance, clearly conveying the relationship between the theme and variations, balancing the voices between the hands, and carefully shaping changes in articulation and dynamics will bring out the music’s lightness and sense of structure.
