This set of 12 variations is based on the Russian dance theme from Wranitzky’s ballet The Waldmädchen. Starting from the easily recognizable outline of the dance, each variation transforms the rhythm, register, accompaniment patterns, and layering of the music, allowing the same theme to take on a range of different characters. The work consists of the theme followed by 12 variations, and one of its chief attractions is the opportunity to compare the distinctive character of each variation. In performance, the theme should remain clear while the balance between the right-hand melody and left-hand accompaniment is carefully controlled; ornamental movement should be kept light and unhurried. Careful changes in dynamics and articulation, together with a steady dance pulse, help bring out the individuality of each variation.
