Based on the aria “Une fièvre brûlante” from Grétry’s opera Richard the Lionheart, this work consists of 8 variations. First, attend to the melody and harmonic flow of the theme; in the variations that follow, listen for changes in rhythm, figuration, register, and the placement of the accompaniment. Although the brilliant movement can easily draw attention away, it is important to maintain the connection with the theme. In performance, bring out the melody clearly and balance the voices carefully, while shaping the character and dynamic transitions of each variation to convey the overall structure.
