Based on a theme by Beethoven himself, this work unfolds through the theme and 32 successive variations. While preserving the outline of the theme, it continually transforms the rhythm, register, harmony, and texture, creating a wide range of expression within a tightly concentrated design. Repeated patterns generate forward momentum, while passages of weighty chords heighten the tension and more lightly moving variations emphasize a sense of motion. In performance, it is important to distinguish the character of each variation and make the movement of the lower voice and the elements of the theme perceptible to the listener. By avoiding excessive reliance on the pedal and refining the articulation and balance between voices, the overall flow and contrasts become more clearly defined.
