This small-scale work is based on a familiar Swiss song and consists of a theme followed by six variations. Starting from a clear theme whose melodic outline is easy to hear, each variation preserves the shape of the melody while introducing changes in the accompaniment, rhythm, register, and the way the sounds are layered. The contrasts are relatively easy to perceive, making it rewarding to follow how the same melody gradually takes on different expressions. In performance, it is important to let the theme sing naturally and carefully distinguish the character of each variation through tempo feel, dynamics, and articulation. By clarifying the roles of the right-hand melody and left-hand accompaniment, while maintaining lightness and evenness of tone, the music’s simple appeal and clear overall design can emerge.
