This set of variations is based on a trio from Süssmayr’s opera and was written by Beethoven for piano. While preserving the theme’s approachable character, the 6 variations, later expanded to 8, introduce changes in rhythm, register, accompaniment, and the layering of voices. One of its main attractions is the way each variation can be distinguished from the others, while the underlying connection to the theme remains clear. In performance, the character of each variation should be shaped through distinct articulation and dynamics, while the melody remains singing and the small ornaments and figurations are kept light and precise. This brings out the work’s wit and fluency.
