Jean Sibelius

Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) was Finland’s leading composer and a central figure in bringing Nordic musical culture to international attention from the late nineteenth into the early twentieth century. Drawing on Finnish nature, traditional culture, and the national epic Kalevala, he developed a musical language marked by concise yet powerful motifs, transparent orchestration, and a distinctive balance of stillness and grandeur. His major works include Symphony No. 2, Finlandia, and the Violin Concerto. Sibelius also wrote a substantial body of piano music, including The Trees, Five Pieces (The Flowers), Kyllikki, and the Sonatinas. Rather than emphasizing virtuoso display, many of these works use economical writing and delicate lyricism to evoke the Nordic landscape, revealing a more intimate side of his musical imagination.
