🇫🇮Jean Sibelius ： Pelleas et Melisande Op.46 – The Three Blind Sisters

This piano arrangement of a passage from incidental music evokes the image of the three blind sisters through its quiet, deeply shadowed atmosphere. Rather than singing out the melody broadly, the performer should carefully shape the fragmentary flow and the changing harmonies. The music unfolds as if following shifts in the scene, with brief surges of tension emerging and subsiding within its dim, restrained mood. In performance, it is important to clarify the handoffs between voices without allowing the accompaniment to become too heavy. Use the pedal to preserve resonance while avoiding muddiness, and maintain the pulse and direction of each phrase even in soft dynamics; this brings out the work’s dreamlike atmosphere and expressive sense of space.
