Overview

Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887–1959) was one of Brazil’s leading composers of the 20th century. While drawing on the tradition of European classical music, he developed a highly individual musical language shaped by Brazilian folk melodies, urban choro, and musical cultures of Indigenous and Afro-Brazilian communities. His music combines complex, energetic rhythms with vivid sonorities, direct melodic writing, and adventurous harmony, reflecting the varied cultural landscape of his homeland. His major works include the Bachianas Brasileiras and the Chôros series. Among his piano works, A Fiandeira and A Prole do Bebê No. 1, subtitled The Dolls, are particularly well known. In the latter, different dolls—made of porcelain, wood, clay, rubber, and other materials—are portrayed through music full of humor, rhythmic vitality, and rich color.
