Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich

Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich (1906–1975) was a Russian-born composer who worked primarily in the Soviet Union and became one of the defining musical figures of the 20th century. He attracted international attention at a young age with his First Symphony and went on to produce major works in many genres, including symphonies, string quartets, concertos, and film music. While navigating the complex political and social realities of the Soviet era, he developed a distinctive musical language marked by sharp satire, tense rhythms, striking contrasts, and profound tragic intensity. Among his piano works, the concise and often witty 24 Preludes, the 24 Preludes and Fugues—where a dialogue with Bach meets a distinctly modern sound—and the varied Piano Sonata No. 2 are especially well known. In the preludes and fugues, each key is given an individual character through lyrical writing, humor, and richly shaded counterpoint.
