“Recitative” is a short, concentrated piece that places a speech-like character at the forefront. Rather than unfolding as a broad, singing melody, its ideas appear intermittently through changes in pitch and dynamics, while pauses create the tension of a monologue. Instead of relying on a smooth rhythmic flow, it is important to let each figure and chord resonance be heard individually. From beginning to end, pay attention to sudden changes of expression and the length of each pause. In forte passages, avoid playing forcefully for its own sake, and preserve a sense of vocal inflection within the hard-edged sonority. Though brief, the piece offers a vivid experience of musical breath—including silence—and sharply defined gestures.
