No. 3, “Romance,” from Dances of the Dolls is a lyrical piano miniature centered on a singing melody, creating an intimate and gentle atmosphere. The roles of melody and accompaniment are clearly defined, while the brief piece conveys natural breathing and subtle nuances. Its appeal lies in the small rises and falls created by changes in dynamics and the shaping of the melodic line. In performance, the right-hand melody should be brought forward without allowing it to sound hard, while the accompaniment remains soft and supportive. Taking care with the ends of phrases and keeping the pedal clear will bring out the romance’s approachable character and delicate emotional expression.
