No. 5 is performed as a continuous pairing of prelude and fugue, moving from the lively motion of the brief prelude to a fugue in which multiple voices engage in dialogue. In the prelude, the flowing smaller notes should remain light and agile, while the momentum of the beat and the changing harmonies are brought clearly into focus. In the fugue, each entrance of the subject should retain a distinct outline, with the balance between the voices carefully controlled. Use the pedal sparingly to avoid blurring the sonority; preserving a sense of tension within the lightness brings out the fascination of the counterpoint.
