Overview

Clara Schumann (1819–1896) was a leading German pianist, composer, and teacher of the Romantic era. Recognized as a child prodigy, she built a major European concert career and became one of the most distinguished pianists of the 19th century. She is often known as the wife of composer Robert Schumann, but her own music includes substantial and finely crafted works such as the Piano Concerto in A minor, Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, and Three Romances. Her style is marked by lyrical elegance, introspective expression, and a refined sensitivity to the colors and textures of the piano. She also contributed to piano arrangements of Robert Schumann’s songs, including pieces represented in Piabase, and played an important role in performing and promoting both her husband’s music and Brahms’s works.
