This two-part work joins a prelude and a fugue, moving from the prelude’s speech-like freedom to a fugue built through the presentation and imitation of its subject. In the prelude, it is important to sustain the harmonic flow without interruption while listening carefully to the inner voices. In the fugue, each entry should be clearly articulated, but the subject should not be overemphasized at the expense of the dialogue among all the voices. Organizing the touch and dynamics of each part, while aligning the direction of the phrases, brings out the music’s tension and richly layered sonority. Use the pedal sparingly, mainly to support the resonance, so that the contours of the smaller movements and the flow toward the cadences remain clear.
