Overview

Alberto Ginastera (1916–1983) was a leading Argentine composer of the 20th century. Drawing on the vitality of South American rhythms and dances, he developed a distinctive language marked by sharp accents, complex meters, and powerful, percussion-like sonorities. His early works make especially vivid use of Argentine musical elements, while his later music moves toward a more modern style incorporating dissonance and sophisticated rhythmic writing. Among his important piano works are the Danzas Argentinas, the technically demanding and nationally colored 12 American Preludes, and Piano Sonata No. 1, whose tense musical language is balanced by brilliant rhythmic energy. Ginastera occupies an important place in the history of Latin American music, connecting the region’s musical culture with 20th-century compositional techniques. His piano music vividly conveys his characteristic rhythmic drive and striking sense of sonority.
