The second piece in Argentine Dances, “Dance of the Graceful Maiden,” is a miniature in which a lyrical, delicate melody unfolds against the suggestion of a folk dance. Within its calm flow, the melody and chordal accompaniment deepen the expression, while the contrast between quiet passages and moments of intensification provides much of its appeal. The melody should remain clearly projected above the inner voices and accompaniment, supported by a gentle tone and natural breathing. Pedaling should be changed with each harmony to keep the sound clear, and the graceful character emerges when a sense of dance rhythm is maintained with only restrained flexibility.
