🇷🇺Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky ： From Childhood Memories First Punishment

“First Punishment—The Nanny Locked Me in a Dark Room” is a dramatic miniature that suggests a child’s anxiety and resistance. Within its brief span, tense motion alternates with moments that seem to pause suddenly, portraying the emotional shifts of someone shut away. Listening closely to changes in sound density and dynamics brings out its narrative quality. In performance, avoid relying on sheer force; instead, clarify the direction of each phrase and the timing of each pause, while keeping strong passages from becoming overly rigid. Carefully balance the roles of melody and accompaniment to convey the childlike directness and instability at the heart of the piece.
