Overview
Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (1839–1881) was a major Russian composer of the 19th century and a key figure in the development of Russian national music. As a member of “The Five,” the circle led by Mily Balakirev, he sought a musical language rooted in Russian folk traditions, the rhythms of spoken language, and vivid portrayals of ordinary people. His style is marked by bold harmonies, distinctive rhythms, and highly individual approaches to dramatic and pictorial expression. His best-known works include the opera Boris Godunov, the orchestral poem Night on Bald Mountain, and the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition. His piano music also includes the Intermezzo in modo classico, In the Village, Meditation, and several pieces inspired by childhood. With its striking imagery and unconventional harmonic writing, Mussorgsky’s music occupies an important place in the Romantic era and helped point toward the development of modern music.
