A walking-like “Promenade” guides the suite as a whole, while the character of the music shifts dramatically from one scene to the next. Consisting of 10 movements, the work moves between passages dominated by weighty chords and powerful rhythms and others filled with delicate, dreamlike sonorities. It is important to distinguish the character of each movement clearly while carefully shaping the balance between voices, the resonance of chords, percussive touch, and contrasts of tempo. Giving the recurring Promenade and the transitions between movements a sense of continuity also helps make the overall structure more vivid.
