Overview

Paul Hindemith (1895–1963), born in Germany, was a major twentieth-century composer, conductor, and violist. Drawing on the legacy of late Romanticism, he developed a distinctive harmonic language based on tonality and shaped it into music marked by clarity, structural discipline, and contrapuntal detail. He also advocated the idea of Gebrauchsmusik, or “music for use,” emphasizing practical music-making and a close relationship between composition and performance. His output ranges widely across chamber music, concertos, stage works, and orchestral music, and he played an important role in the neoclassical currents of modern German music. Among his piano works, Ludus Tonalis is especially significant for its systematic exploration of tonality and counterpoint. Other works, including the Dances, Op. 19, Concert Music for Piano, Brass and Two Harps, Op. 49, and In einer Nacht—Traum und Erlebnis, reveal his characteristic rhythmic drive, precise craftsmanship, and interest in combining traditional forms with modern musical expression.
