Written for piano and string orchestra, this concerto-like work is built around a theme and four variations. Each variation presents one of four temperaments—melancholic, sanguine, phlegmatic, and choleric—as a distinct musical expression, while contrapuntal movement and clear rhythmic drive give the whole work definition. One of its chief attractions is the contrast between the characters of the variations. The pianist must attend not only to the brilliance of the solo part, but also to its dialogue and interplay with the strings. Accurate coordination of the detailed figures should be combined with bold changes of expression, dynamics, and tone color from one section to the next.
