Overview
Manuel de Falla (1876–1946), born in Cádiz, was a Spanish composer who played an important role in establishing Spain’s musical identity in the 20th century. He drew on Andalusian folk music and flamenco, incorporating their rhythms, modes, and distinctive sonorities while also absorbing influences from French modernism. His music connects a strong sense of Spanish character with refined compositional technique. He is best known for the ballets El amor brujo and The Three-Cornered Hat, as well as the orchestral work Nights in the Gardens of Spain. In his piano music, works such as Four Spanish Pieces and Allegro de Concierto reveal the dance-like qualities and vivid colors of Spanish music. His Fantasía Baetica, meanwhile, evokes Andalusia through forceful rhythms and demanding virtuosity.
