Overview

Isaac Albéniz (1860–1909) was a leading Spanish composer and pianist associated with the Spanish nationalist school. Recognized as a child prodigy, he performed throughout Spain and across Europe, helping bring Spanish musical identity to international attention in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His piano music draws on regional folk traditions, dance rhythms, and sonorities evocative of the guitar. Passionate rhythms, lyrical melodies, and richly colored harmonies combine to suggest the landscapes and atmosphere of different parts of Spain. His major works include España, the Suite española, and Iberia; the last of these is a landmark piano collection, combining formidable technical demands with refined sensitivity to tone color. The 12 Piezas Características, represented in Piabase by pieces such as Barcarola, Gavotte, Mazurka, Pavana, and Plegaria, shows another side of Albéniz: concise, approachable pieces shaped by varied dance and character forms while retaining his distinctive Spanish flavor.
