Serving as the opening prelude of España (Six Album Leaves), this miniature brings together a melody supported by flowing broken chords and a rhythmic character suggestive of Spanish dance. Despite its brevity, it reveals changes in brightness and shading. Its expression becomes easier to grasp when one listens for the contrast between passages in which the melody is allowed to sing and those in which the animated accompaniment comes to the fore. In performance, the right-hand melody should remain gently songful, while the left-hand figures should be kept light and clearly shaped, with care taken not to cloud the sonority with the pedal. The rhythm should not become mechanical; a natural flexibility that follows the breathing of the phrases brings out the delicate color and approachable charm.
