“Evocación,” which opens Book 1 of Iberia, is a lyrical miniature marked by the feeling of following a distant memory and by delicate harmonic shifts. A gently singing melody remains at the center, while inner voices and accompaniment overlap to create depth, with tension and release emerging as if the scene were changing. The melody should be allowed to resonate fully, while the fine movement of the accompaniment should not come too far forward, and the pedal should be used without clouding the sound. Rather than keeping the tempo rigid, a flexible ebb and flow guided by the breathing of each phrase allows the nostalgic atmosphere to emerge naturally.
