Gabriel Urbain Fauré

Gabriel Urbain Fauré (1845–1924) was a leading French composer of the late Romantic era. His music is characterized by graceful melodies, refined chromatic harmony, and restrained expression, placing greater emphasis on inward feeling and subtle shifts of sound than on overtly dramatic effects. He is widely known for his songs, chamber music, and Requiem, but his distinctive musical language is also clearly evident in his piano works. In the Three Nocturnes and Three Songs without Words, singing melodies are closely woven with gentle, nuanced harmonies, while the Eight Pieces display a variety of moods through miniatures such as the Capriccio and Adagietto. As director of the Paris Conservatoire, Fauré also devoted himself to the education of younger musicians and influenced the development of twentieth-century French music, including composers such as Debussy.
