Overview

Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc (1899–1963) was a major French composer of the 20th century. As a member of Les Six, alongside figures such as Darius Milhaud and Arthur Honegger, he helped bring a new spirit to French music after the First World War. His style is marked by lightness, wit, clear and approachable harmonies, and rhythmic qualities reminiscent of jazz and chanson, while his religious works reveal profound lyricism and solemnity. He wrote across a wide range of genres, including the ballet Les Biches, the sacred work Gloria, and the opera Dialogues des Carmélites. Among his piano compositions, the 15 Impromptus are especially representative: within concise forms, Poulenc combines elegance and subtle emotional nuance. No. 10, “Hommage à l’échelle,” No. 12, “Hommage à Schubert,” and No. 15, “Hommage à Edith Piaf,” each display different aspects of his distinctive musical language.
